How it works

Three things decide a slow-travel plan. We watch all three.

Most planners give you a list of places. Slowbirds gives you the calendar, the budget, and the visa clock — the parts that decide whether a great plan can meet reality. Plot your course for a month, a season, three years... we’ll handle the math and the optimization.

The seasons

Every city carries a twelve-month calendar: when are peak, shoulder, good deals and the months to avoid — with the local truth, like Chiang Mai’s burning season or when the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance.

The budget

Monthly costs researched per city: lodging, food, local transport, everyday activities. Options on how to get there, with realistic estimates based on where you’re coming from. Provide your own overhead on its own line.

The visa clock

Schengen’s rolling 90-in-180 counted the way border officers count it. Per-country limits, annual caps, and how many visa-free days you’d have left before you add the next stop.

When to go

Know what a month costs — in that month.

Every destination has a “when to go” chart: your daily cost from Budget to Luxury lifestyle across all twelve months, with average temperatures on the same axis. July in Lisbon and January in Lisbon are different trips. The chart shows exactly how different, before you book.

Adding a stop

The next stop, sorted for the month you’d arrive.

Slowbirds already knows when you’d get there. So when you look for the next destination, it ranks every city for that month — the best deals first and tells you which regions are in season right then. If your earlier stays have eaten into a visa allowance, we let you know before you pick.

Regions in season for May

🇺🇾 Montevideo, Uruguay Good deal in May
Latin America · from $2,200/mo · ~200 km away
🇵🇪 Lima, Peru Good deal in May

🇲🇽 Oaxaca, Mexico Good deal in May Only 20 visa-free days left
Latin America · from $1,800/mo · ~5,300 km away
The visa clock

Counted the way border officers count it.

Add stops and Slowbirds tracks the Schengen rolling 180-day window — arrival and departure days included — and warns you before a plan breaks the 90-day rule. Per-country limits get the same care, including stays that are fine alone but too long combined. Reorder a stop and every number follows.

Things to know

Warning  Schengen days are at 89/90 within a 180-day window — little room left for side trips.
Info  Oaxaca: nicely timed — most of this stay lands in value months.
Info  Athens: 30 nights in May is peak season — expect higher prices and crowds.

Flags update live as you drag stops around. One button, Optimize, tries every order and suggests a cheaper, better-timed one. You decide whether to adapt.

The knowledgebase

Destination cities, properly researched.

Season calendars with the local truth, visa rules, languages, live exchange rates with a year’s trend, climate normals, neighborhoods to base yourself in and how those impact your budget. Every number says what’s inside it and when we last checked.

Pricing

$80 a year. That’s it.

One price, once a year, however much travel you plan with it, however often you update or change plans. No monthly drip, no tiers of tiers. During the closed beta it’s free — you’re helping us get the system right.

Questions

We’ve got answers.

Are the costs accurate?

We research per city and adjust for the season and your party size. We show exactly what’s included. But let’s be clear - we’re not a travel agent, and we’re not selling you trips. Obviously you need to confirm prices before you lock in your travel. Our members can share with us what their experiences really were, and we compare it against our numbers and re-examine anything that drifts.

What the heck is a slowbird?

A slowbird is a traditional traveler who stopped hurrying. You stay around a while instead of running from place to place every few days. Kind of like those people that head to the tropics for winter, but instead - you go where you want, when you want.

Do I need to be retired?

No need at all. You need time and curiosity and the desire to enjoy where you are. A lot of slowbirds are early retirees, but there’s a ton of digital nomads working remotely.

Is my passport supported?

Visa rules are written for US passports today, with UK, Canadian, and Australian rules being added city by city.

What does “closed beta” mean?

It means we’re getting the system finalized for release and to help, we’re letting people in a few at a time so we can get feedback so everything is nailed down for launch. Join the list and we’ll email you once when your spot opens.

Plan your next stretch, however long or far it goes.
